Root Canal Treatment

A root canal is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that is badly decayed, damaged, or infected. Instead of removing the tooth, your dentist removes the infected tissue inside, cleans the root canals, and seals the tooth to restore its function. Root canal treatments are highly effective and allow patients to keep their natural teeth for many years.

Why a Root Canal May Be Needed

  • Deep decay that has reached the inner nerve of the tooth

  • Infection or abscess at the root of the tooth

  • Cracked or fractured tooth exposing the pulp

  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth causing irritation

Signs you might need a root canal include: persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of the gums, or darkening of the tooth.

The Procedure

  1. Examination and X-rays
Your dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to determine the extent of the infection.

  2. Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is given to numb the tooth and surrounding area so you remain comfortable during the procedure.

  3. Accessing the Pulp
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber.

  4. Cleaning the Canals
The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed. The inside of the tooth and root canals are cleaned and shaped.

  5. Filling and Sealing
The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection, and the opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.

  6. Restoration
In most cases, a crown is placed on the tooth afterward to restore its strength, shape, and natural appearance.

Recovery and Aftercare

  • Mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal for a few days and can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication.

  • Oral hygiene: Continue brushing and flossing regularly to keep the area clean.

  • Follow-up visit: Your dentist will ensure healing is progressing and may recommend a permanent crown for full protection.
